Why choose Pendo for session replay and product analytics?

Most session replay tools help teams see what happened in a session. Pendo Session Replay helps product teams see what happened and act on it.

Buyer Question Standalone Session Replay Tools Pendo Session Replay
Can I see what users did? Yes. This is what every replay tool is built for. Yes. Web and native mobile replays, with frustration signals flagged automatically.
Can I tell who the user was? Sometimes, if you pass user and account traits into the replay tool yourself. Yes. Replay uses the same user and account model as Pendo product analytics, so any replay filters to a segment, plan, or account.
Can I go from a metric to the sessions behind it? Usually needs a separate analytics tool and an integration to stitch the two together. Yes. Replay runs on the same tagged events as Pendo analytics, so a funnel drop-off leads to its replays in one click.
Can I act on insights without another release? Rarely. Replay tools surface the problem; fixing it goes to the backlog. Yes. Launch an in-app guide, poll, or announcement to the affected segment from the same platform.
Where does PII get masked? Varies by tool. Check whether masking runs on the device or after the data is transmitted. On the device. Text is masked and elements blocked before anything is compressed or sent to Pendo.
Can I connect web and mobile sessions? Frequently one or the other, or mobile through a separate SDK and dashboard. Yes. Web and native mobile replays in one dashboard, on one user model.

No pressure. Just answers.

Session Replay FAQs

+

Pendo Session Replay is session replay software that records real user sessions in web and native mobile apps and plays them back inside Pendo, alongside the product analytics, in-app guides, and feedback for the same users. It captures clicks, cursor movement, scrolling, taps, screen views, and frustration signals such as rage clicks. Read the full session replay guide for how the technology works.

+

Yes — using Pendo MCP, you can connect AI assistants to Pendo and have them help you find the right session replays for whatever you're investigating. Inside Pendo itself, Suggested Session Replays and real-time relevance filters also point you to the sessions that matter most, so you don't have to watch every recording to find the moments that count.

+

Yes. Pendo records sessions in any third-party application where the Pendo snippet is installed. This gives you visibility across your entire software ecosystem, not just your core product.

+

Pendo Session Replay supports iOS with UIKit and SwiftUI, Android with View and Jetpack Compose, plus React Native, .NET MAUI, and Flutter. Mobile replay captures screen views, taps, and scrolls, flags rage taps, and keeps recording when the device goes offline. Web and mobile sessions land in the same dashboard on the same user model.

+

Yes. Masking runs on the device: sensitive text is masked and elements blocked before any data is compressed or sent to Pendo, so excluded content never leaves the user's browser or app. Passwords and payment fields are excluded by default, and you can tune what's captured with three no-code modes — Maximum Privacy, Inputs Only, and Minimum Privacy — plus CSS selector rules for specific elements. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and Pendo maintains GDPR, CCPA, and SOC 2 compliance.

Hotjar and Clarity both surface rage clicks in heatmaps and individual session replays — you can filter sessions by rage click events and watch exactly what happened. What they lack is product context. Neither tool knows whether the user rage-clicking is a trial user hitting a paywall, a power user hitting a broken shortcut, or an onboarding user confused by a tooltip — because they don't have that identity layer. Pendo can filter replays to that specific cohort because Session Replay and Analytics share the same user model. The 47 rage clicks become answerable: it was 39 trial accounts in their first week.

+

Yes — but only if your session replay tool is connected to developer-level context. Watching a replay shows you what a user did; identifying root cause requires knowing what the application was doing at the same time. Pendo Session Replay includes synchronized developer tools — console logs and network requests run in the same timeline as the user interaction. When you see a rage click, you can immediately check whether a network request failed, whether a JavaScript error fired, or whether the UI rendered in a state the user didn't expect. This eliminates the back-and-forth between product and engineering teams that normally adds days to bug resolution.

+

Yes. There are no recording caps and no sampling, so capture volume doesn't fall off as traffic grows, and replays are retained for 30 days by default with a 90-day option. Access is controlled per user through the Replay User permission, and because replay lives inside the Pendo platform, product, design, support, and go-to-market teams work from the same data instead of buying and stitching together separate tools. It's built first for product teams and used org-wide in practice.

Shopmonkey rolled out Pendo Session Replay across their entire organization.

+

Unlike standalone replay tools, Pendo Session Replay runs inside the same platform as Pendo product analytics — on the same tagged events — so every replay is tied to the data that explains it. When a metric moves, you can go from the data point straight to the replays behind it in a single click, with no second tag to install and no data to stitch together. Pendo unifies quantitative, qualitative, visual, and sentiment signals in one place, which is why teams choose it over point solutions that show you what happened without the why. Here's why a session replay point solution doesn't cut it.
